What this EV charging cost calculator does
This free EV charging cost calculator works out what it costs to run an electric car where you live, and compares that against the same mileage in a petrol car. It runs entirely in your browser. There is no sign-up, no account, no email box and nothing is sent to a server. Change any input and the numbers update instantly.
Most published charging-cost figures use a single national average, which is close to useless when residential electricity runs from about 12 cents per kWh in Idaho to about 52 cents in Hawaii. The calculator starts from your own state rate and lets you override every assumption.

How to use the EV charging cost calculator
- Pick your state. The home rate fills in from the EIA average residential price for that state. Choose Custom rate and type your own number if you know your actual tariff, which is better still.
- Set your annual mileage and efficiency. Efficiency is miles per kWh. Most current EVs sit between 2.8 and 4.0; a large electric pickup can be nearer 2.0.
- Set your charging mix. The share you charge at home is the single biggest lever in the whole calculation.
- Set the petrol comparison. Use the car you would otherwise be driving, not a class average.
How the EV charging cost calculator works, in full
Nothing here is hidden. The EV charging cost calculator applies four steps.
- Energy needed: annual miles divided by miles per kWh, then multiplied by one plus the charging-loss percentage. Losses are real: roughly 8-12% of the energy drawn from the wall never reaches the battery.
- Blended price: the home share is priced at your home rate, and the remainder is split between public Level 2 and DC fast charging at the rates you set.
- Annual electricity cost: energy needed multiplied by the blended price.
- Petrol comparison: annual miles divided by MPG, multiplied by the price per gallon.

The public charging defaults are ranges, not measurements. Networks price differently by region, by membership tier and sometimes by time of day, and a few still bill per minute rather than per kWh. If you already know what your network charges, type that number in.

What the numbers usually show
Three patterns come out of this calculation almost everywhere.
- Home charging share matters more than state. Moving from 100% home to 0% home typically costs more than moving from a cheap state to an expensive one.
- Efficiency matters more than battery size. A bigger pack does not change cost per mile; miles per kWh does.
- The petrol car you compare against decides the headline. Against a 20 MPG SUV an EV looks transformative; against a 50 MPG hybrid the gap narrows sharply.

Limitations of this EV charging cost calculator
- State averages are averages. Your utility, your tariff and your time-of-use plan can all move the number substantially. Overnight EV rates in particular can undercut the state average by a wide margin.
- Taxes and fixed charges are excluded. The calculation is marginal cost per kWh, not your whole bill. Some states also levy an annual EV registration fee, which this does not include.
- It is a fuel comparison, not a total cost of ownership model. Insurance, depreciation, maintenance and financing are not in here. Our guides on EV depreciation and the EV charger tax credit cover those separately.
- Winter reduces efficiency. Cold weather can cut miles per kWh by 20-30%. If you want a winter figure, lower the efficiency input accordingly.

Yes. It is free, needs no account or email address, and runs entirely in your browser. No inputs are transmitted or stored.
Where do the electricity rates come from?
The state defaults are average residential electricity prices published by the US Energy Information Administration. You can replace any of them with your own tariff, which will always give a more accurate result.
Why is the kWh figure higher than miles divided by efficiency?
Because charging is not perfectly efficient. Roughly 8 to 12 percent of the energy drawn from the wall is lost as heat before it reaches the battery, so the calculator adds a loss percentage on top.
What efficiency should I enter for my car?
Most current mainstream EVs deliver between 2.8 and 4.0 miles per kWh in mixed driving. Large electric pickups can be closer to 2.0. Your car trip computer will show a lifetime average, which is the best number to use.
Does it account for time-of-use electricity rates?
Not automatically, because tariffs vary too much to model reliably. If you charge overnight on an EV rate, enter that off-peak price as your home rate rather than the state average.
Does it include the federal EV charger tax credit?
No, and that credit no longer exists for new installations. Section 30C expired on 30 June 2026. This calculator covers running costs only, not the one-off cost of installing equipment.
